When camping, I found it best to keep the solar panels staked out in the sun, but have my battery remain in the shade. I keep the battery in the protective silicone sleeve that Goal Zero makes for it and since that is black the battery would get quite hot in the sun. Using this extension cord I was able to keep the battery in the shade and still leave the panels in the sun. It worked especially well when I wanted to use the battery USB port to charge devices while it was also being charged from the sun.

There is one easy way to get around needing to use this extension when I didn't have devices I wanted to run off the battery as it charged. I would place the battery under the solar panels. This way the panels absorb the heat and convert it to power all while protecting the battery.

Another tip is to make sure your panels are staked down and secure. On a very remote camp, I setup the panels and battery and left for a few hours to canoe. When I returned I thought my gear was stolen as it was not around. Turns out that during the time I was gone some wind or possibly a dust devil came through and my panels and battery were a dozen or so yards away down a hill. After that experience I always stake down my panels when using and leaving them out.

One thing to watch when purchasing these extensions is that Goal Zero uses different sizes for their different battery and solar power combinations. I use this extension between a Goal Zero 12201 Nomad 27M Solar Panel and their Goal Zero 11102 Sherpa 120 Battery. I also reviewed each of those.
