Stanley 8000 Watt, 10,000 Watt Surge All Weather Electric Start Generator, Removable Control Panel with Bonus 15-Feet Heavy Duty Cord Review

Another reviewer gave this generator 1 star based on customer support experience... I think customer support is horrible everywhere, so this review is focused solely on my experience with the product itself... not my experience with shipping services or other customer support services.

Overall...

I LOVE THIS GENERATOR. If it were legal to breed with it I would, but that would create an unholy race of human-generator hybrids... uhh... so... anyway... back to the generator...

Setting your expectations...

Shipping:

This is a large item, so shipping needs to be coordinated through special freight carriers, which can add a couple of weeks to your delivery wait time. This will be the case for ANY portable generator that you order online from anywhere.

If your need a generator RIGHT NOW, then troll your local home improvement big-box stores and/or warehouse stores for what they have in stock - which will meet the basic need to power your fridge and space heater but not your whole house.

CAUTION - Most of these box-store generators are NOT weatherproof.... So if you need to use it in a downpour or snowstorm... beware of carbon monoxide!

Initial Setup:

The oil fill cap is at an awkward angle... you should use a funnel with a flexible goose neck to fill the oil or you'll need a helper to tilt the generator (not advised). If you plan on owning a lot of gas-powered gear, a gooseneck funnel is a good thing to have.

The battery is also in an awkwardly tight place. It takes a bit of patience and a helper to properly align the battery so that you can screw-down the wires onto the terminals. (This is very annoying, but it's a once-and-done activity unless your battery dies)
Connect the battery, fill the oil, fill the gas, and you're ready!

Use:

It doesn't get easier. Put the choke lever to the start position. Turn the knob to start. Put the choke to the run position. The battery starts the engine for you... Or you can use the manual pull string (like a lawn mower) if the battery is dead.

It's weatherproof, so you should use it outside and avoiding choking on carbon monoxide. The detachable power panel is essentially a specialized extension cord that lets you access the outlets inside while the generator is outside.

During our last power outage, I ran my TV / cable box, fridge, computers, and some lights for over 18 hours on one tank of gas. That is about as good as portable, non-construction-site, home-use generators get... anything better will not be portable, and will cost you a lot more.

Maintenance:

Use "Sta-bil" or another gas stabilizer to keep the gas from developing a sticky, varnish-like consistency when not in use, which can ruin any gas motor. It is best to drain the gas when not in use, but who want to do that?!? And who knows when you'll have another power outage?!? So... If you're not going to drain the gas tank, use gas stabilizer.

BONUS - Powering the whole house with your portable generator:

If you want to power your well-water pump or central heater, for example, you'll need to have the generator connected to your house wiring. No portable generator comes with what you need to safely connect your generator to your house wiring.

There are two safe ways to wire a portable generator to your house plus one extremely stupid way.

First, the stupid way...

You can have a special cord made that allows you to plug your generator's output into one of your home's existing 240V power outlets, such as your stove or dryer outlet. If you do this, you run the risk of short-circuiting your main breaker panel when the main power comes back on, which will more-than-likely set your house on fire and could kill you... thus proving Charles Darwin's theory around survival-of-the-fittest whereby the stupid are defeated by their own "cleverness".

The safe options:

- Interlock kit - Allows any circuit in your house to be safely powered by your generator, which is wired into your main breaker box.
- Transfer box - Allows a few of your more important circuits to be available via a separate breaker box powered by your generator if you lose power.

Each of the safe options requires modifications to your home's main breaker panel and the addition of other hardware. You can google each option for more details. It is highly recommended that you leave the installation to a qualified electrician.

That's all!!!

Have fun with your portable power!
