We received notice a week ago that our neighborhood would experience a power shutdown for most of the day while PG&E performed upgrades on underground equipment. I am an engineer and work from my house telecomutting to our offices, so needed to keep working. I decided to purchase a small power plant, but did not want to spend more than $200 to $300, and researched options on Amazon. Since I live in California the unit had to be CARB compliant. The Champion 1500 Watt unit looked like a great buy, but I was wary considering that it had only one review and that one was not good. I ordered it on a Wednesday and it arrived on Friday, I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box. it was very well packed and arrived without damage. The unit looked great, not chintzy as I expected, and has nice features.I put in oil and the motor started on the first pull. I ran a number of tests on the output, without load the unit puts out 125 volts, as soon as a load is engaged the voltage drops down to around 120v. I tried startup loads of up to 14 amps for up to 10 seconds and although the unit pulled down under the load, and the voltage dropped to 110v, it put out the 1500 watts.
The power outage was today, started about 8:30a and went until 1:30p. I ran power to my computer, monitor, printer, phone, lights, and internet modem and router. I also powered the refrigerator/freezer and fish aquarium. The unit ran like a champ the whole time with a continuos draw of 3 to 4 amps, with moment loads of 12 amps when the refrigerator started. Not a drop of oil under the unit from running for 5 hrs, no loose bolts or any other signs of absolescense.
The only minor complaints, I put a digital volt meter on the output next to my computer and noted that the voltage constantly shifts 2 to 3 volts, the float type gas guage says empty when the tank is half full and the unit, while fairly quiet is probably too loud to use in a campground with other campers near by.
Overall I think it is a great value for the money and would recomend it to to anyone who needs a small unit around for emergencies.
