I got this to run an 8.5x20 car hauler converted to a prep kitchen when I only need a light load(pun intended).. like when its parked in the street and i just need lights and radio. Its rated at 1k watts with 1.2k surge.. and noise is supposedly 60 Db.Heres what I found. I kept a voltmeter running while i tested the load. it puts out 115.8 - 116.4V steady, unless it gets hit with hard surge.
2 stroke engine.. 50:1 ratio... 30:1 for the first 50 hours.
Instruction booklet is broken English, but understandable.
it runs all the lights, TV, xbox, laptop, router, small fans and the radio fine. Thats what we would be doing out there during the winter. its an inverter generator so runs the electronics with minimal risk.
It has a fit trying to just startup the fan on the AC unit(no ac, just fan), but it does eventually fire up. I would probably wreck my fan motor if i did that to many times. The unit is a Coleman 13.5k Btu... again, i tried staring FAN ONLY and it struggled. All lights dimmed and voltage dropped to 50volts before it recovered.
Small Microwave is a no go.. wont even fire up. Small dorm room type microwave.
Its noise level is rated at 60 DB at 21 feet. Well, compared to my honda 3000, this seems a bit louder. It may be due to the higher pitch of the 2 stroke, but i dont think I would want to be next to this thing all night long. Again, thats not what I got it for... its to run a few lights while I use the trailer and dont want to drag it into the drive way for AC or pull out the honda. It weights 29 lbs.. honda weighs 145.
Ive been on the lookout for a honda2000 for a decent price for a while with no luck.. If i was able to get the honda 1000 for under $400, I'd probably have gone that route. But the 1000I goes for $500-$600 and the 2000I is over $800. For a pissy $200, and a brand name, this is a decent deal.
Update:
If i was able to reduce this to 2-3 stars, I would. I gave it a realtime test run this weekend. While running 2 4 foot shop lights, a wireless router, I tuned on the radio in the trailer.. The gen choked, all the lights blinked and the radio blinked and shut off. (its a small 150 watt portable). Tried again with same results. shut off the lights, and tuned on radio and it started up, but the gen did have a significant drop in rpm with about 3 second recovery time. Once it was upto speed, turning on the lights had little effect and all was good. disappointing this cannot handle a 'surge' from a radio.
Also, noise from the unit can be irritating. it needs to be about 20 feet away to be bearable. Side by side with my honda 3000 and this drowned out the honda completely. Honda cannot be heard inside the trailer even when its right against the v-nose. this one needs significant distance. Also, it runs MUCH quieter under full load than with little to none. Tone changes and deepens and is much more comfortable.
I paid $199 for it new. So im not to disturbed, but If I paid retail, or even close to it i would be looking for a refund.
Update 1/20/2012: reduced to 2 stars. The unit became impossible to start in cold weather. I had to bring it inside for a day, warm it up, and bring it out and start it. finally got it started just as the recoil broke. I gave up and returned it. For 150$ more, i got the champion 2000 on sale at costco.
