I had a lawn mowing service when I was younger and just lucked out and bought a deck that had a kohler motor. It makes a difference . They use hydrolic valve adjustors which means you never have to adjust valve stem clearance yourself . This saves thousands of dollars or hours of your time and frustration over the life of the product . Having the whole house transfer switch is the way to go - powers everything and cuts down on installation costs . It is a big panel on the outside of the home . You know by looking at the panel you have a solid serious system in place . The Kohler generator box and foot print though blends into any landscape well . I purchased the on cue system which is a must have too for $300 . Open it up and it gives you a perfect history of your machine and your battery condition . You also need to check and see if you need the cold weather kit .The way Kohler works is through territorial distributors who in turn work with recommended installers . I had both the distributor and their certified installer on my little household project . These are the easiest generators to set up but it still took 3 guys 6 hours and 15 minutes to put in . Power was out for about 2 hours of that time . I can't see buying this and using your own people myself . Call a Kohler distributor and set up your install with their recommended people . My crew installed these 5 days a week ...they were good . They even removed a tree for me and took care of all the permits . Yes you will need permits more then likely . Installation was about $2700 . My only disappointment was no long term transferable warranty was available . They kept saying you wouldn't need one anyway with a Kohler unit they rarely break and often only after a decade or more of service .
I thought the self test would take the house off grid once a week but it does not . Sort of seems wasteful to just burn 20 minutes of NG running the gen set but this way you do not have to reset all your digital clocks . It comes on within 10 seconds of a outage or now this is important a unsafe voltage fluctuation that puts your electronics at risk - it takes you off grid until the power is stable . Maintenance during the first few years with warranty is best done by the installers . It runs $180 a year and includes a ton of electrical tests as well as a oil and filter change which is set up to be very simple . Checking the oil is just like on a car your dipstick has a loop and is easily visable . The cover has a very solid lock and key . The on cue sends you a email if your battery goes bad or any problems develop . It gives amazing stats and you just need a open Ethernet port on your router . The $300 is well worth it and you can learn how to adjust the program while away from home and check on your gen set . With a good relationship with your installer you could be vacationing in the Bahamas have a problem and it will be solved while your away . This unit is perfect for small retirement homes with one air conditioner of 3 ton or less and some NG appliances . The fuel savings from a 20 k unit are meaningful . It still costs more to run then to pay for the power . Mine is new but my best guess is it costs about $18 a day to run this where my utility bill is usually about $10 a day . These figures are my best guess .
Another good thing about this gen set is it can work with solar panels which we all will have in the future . National security demands it . I find it hard to believe the gas stations in my area don't all have one of these to run their pumps and registrars during frequent outages that are occurring as the power grid ages and companies have been cutting back budgets .This gen set looks good , requires low maintenance , had dedicated factory installers that do almost nothing but install gen sets , My whole project cost $6700 with permits , installation , the cold weather carb kit , generator , whole house transfer switch and on cue . I had to wait 2 weeks to get a open install date after signing a purchase agreement and everything was done in under one day by a crew that obviously were comfortable and not new to installing these . The self adjusting hydrolic valves in the kohler motors and their reputation since 1910 along with size and fuel costs make this the gen set to buy in this size . Consumer Reports top choice in this size .
