Reliance Controls Q310A 10-Ciruit Transfer Switch, 125/250-Volt Review

I purchased my Reliance Q310A transfer switch after hurricane Irene left us without power for five days. I was drawn to this unit because of the number of circuits it handled (up to 10) and because the supplied breakers could be swapped-out for values that met my needs.

The Q310A is rated at 30 Amps, for use with generators up to 7500W. The unit is well designed and constructed. I especially liked the excellent instructional video (on Reliance's website) that steps you through the entire installation process. I recommend that anyone installing one of these for the first time watch that video before attempting the installation.

The switch comes preconfigured with 1-dual 30A, 1-dual 20A, and 6-15A circuit breakers, but as I mentioned, these can easily be changed. It uses a common and inexpensive breaker that can be purchased at any home improvement store for next to nothing. How many actual circuits you can control depends on how many dual (220V) breakers you require. Note: You cannot install " breakers in this panel because of the way it switches.

Sorting out which circuits you want and how/where you'll mount the switch can take as long as the physical installation, but it's imperative that you have a good plan before starting. Once my plan was in-place the actual installation took only a few hours.

There are two common ways of getting power from the generator to this switch. Which you choose depends on your situation.
1) For garage mounted electrical panels you would usually install the included 14L-30R receptacle in the cutout on the front of the switch. When the outage occurs you place the generator OUTSIDE the garage, run an extension cable from the generator under the closed garage door and plug it into the receptacle on the transfer switch.
2) For electrical panels in the basement it may be better to install an Input Box on the outside of the house (the Reliance PB30 is what I used). With this configuration the input box is hard-wired to the transfer switch, so you won't need the receptacle. The Q310A comes with a blank-out panel to cover the receptacle hole, or you could purchase the model Q310C, which is the same as the Q310A, but without the receptacle.

Lastly: GenTran makes a similar product which connects differently but achieves the same results. I had a slight preference for the Reliance switch, but my neighbor has the GenTran and it also works fine.
