Generac 5951 Wireless Remote in Home Monitor - Advanced (Nexus) Review

I recently had installed the Generac Guardian 5875 20KW generator (which I have reviewed on Amazon) and bought two accessories with it--(1) cold weather kit 5947 to protect the battery, and (2) this monitor. Unlike the negative reviewer, I understood when I bought this that it was only a monitor, and could not turn my generator on and off like a remote on a TV (the only exception being to initiate a test). Nonetheless I find this very useful. Here is why I like it.

1. The generator is located on the side of my house, and there is no door or window that I can look out of to do a visual check to see if the green light is on (which indicates that the generator is on and ready to use). But with this monitor I don't need to. There is a solid amber light on the front of the monitor that glows steadily when the generator is ready, and blinks if it is not (as was the case when the generator had to be turned off for my plumbing inspection). That light is bright and easily visible.

2. Up close the home screen of the monitor lists the current status and says "Ready to Run." It also shows battery strength (so you can see if your battery is starting to go) and the signal strength of the wireless signal (so you can be sure the monitor will work).

IMPORTANT: Since the monitor works wirelessly, it needs to be placed as close as possible to the generator, which for me means on a shelf on the wall in my living room that faces the side of my house where the generator is located. However, this is not much larger than a wrist heart rate monitor, and is not obtrusive at all.

In addition, although you can power the monitor with three AAA batteries, the instruction manual specifically says :" The unit is NOT designed to run continuously on battery power." If you use batteries instead of plugging this into an electrical outlet, then the monitor will spend a lot of time in "sleep" mode. The bottom line is that you won't have as much data and can even lose data if your batteries die (more about data below).

3. There is a test menu that permits stopping and starting the generator for a test, which will last about 15 minutes. However as a practical matter I have the generator programmed for a test once a week on Tuesday afternoon, so I probably won't need to do any random tests. The monitor also permits me to change the day and time of the tests without having to go outside to do so on the generator (you might want to make a change if you are having company come over, and prefer they not have to listen to the 15 minute generator test).

4. There is a history menu that contains data about "events" such as an alarm, start or stop, loss of radio signal. This is the kind of data that you can lose if you use batteries that go dead to operate the monitor.

Bottom line: At a glance I can always confirm that my generator is operational and that my battery is in good shape. I also like the ability to remotely change the weekly test day and time without having to go outside to do it on the generator (which is mounted on a three foot concrete pedestal since I live in a flood zone, and therefore is not as easily accessible to me as if it was on the ground). For me this is very useful, and I am happy that I bought this.

Update January 27, 2013: We have had bitterly cold weather the past week. The other day my monitor started flashing an alarm "Inspect battery." Fortunately the battery was fine, and the contractor who installed this for me just had to reset something on the generator. But it's good to know that if there ever is a battery problem that I will be alerted with a flashing visual display.
