When the power goes out, this generator eliminates the trouble of dealing with a fuse box in a dark basement or going outside in a storm to start a portable generator. After all LP or natural gas and electrical connections are completed, the Generac 5871 is ready to run 24/7 and requires absolutely no manual operation, no fueling, and no extension cords. The generator responds within seconds of power outages, so inconveniences like heat or air conditioning loss and burst pipes or spoiled food are quickly avoided.
Initial setup is easy. The generator arrives pre-wired and equipped with the necessary installation gear: a 10-circuit transfer switch (NEMA 1, indoor-rated only), pre-wired conduits, an outdoor connection box, a flexible fuel line pigtail, and a composite mounting pad. (Additional items and tools may be needed to complete the installation to meet local codes. Consult a licensed professional for further details.)
The unit can be programmed to perform a weekly exercise at the time of your choice, so it will be ready for continuous and reliable operation on a moment's notice. For your convenience, it also offers a two-line LCD digital controller, an at a glance indicator light and system status LED, plus an easy-to-access external main circuit breaker.
Superior Technology for Secure Output, Quiet Operation, and Durability
Thanks to Generac's exclusive True Power Technology, this generator provides clean, continuous power, so sensitive electronics and microchip appliances like laptops and HVAC equipment can be operated without the worry that unexpected power surges bring. The ultra-quiet design means that noise levels during self-tests are 1/3 quieter than portable generators, so your daily routine is unaffected.
The generator's corrosion-resistant, galvanized steel enclosure is protected by Generac's proprietary RhinoCoat system--a unique process that binds the paint to the metal surface for a long-lasting, durable finish. This allows the generator to sit outdoors and withstand harsh weather conditions without developing an unsightly appearance.
Like all Generac generators, this model is UL (Underwriters Laboratories) listed for safety.
Rugged, Worry-Free Design
The generator features the 530cc Generac OHVI® Engine, an exclusive air-cooled generator engine with a high-performance design that can accommodate large electrical loads. The engine optimizes power to respond swiftly to changing conditions. To add to your peace of mind, the engine requires routine maintenance only once every two years, or after 200 hours of use.
This Generac generator meets CARB requirements. It requires a Group 26R 12-volt minimum 525 CCA battery (sold separately).

Generac Guardian Series 5871 10,000 Watt Air-Cooled Liquid Propane/Natural Gas Powered Standby Generator With Transfer Switch (CARB Compliant) Review
I ordered the Generac 5871 last Summer and had it installed by a local electrical contractor. Although I didn't order it from Amazon, the delivered price was just about exactly the same as the price Amazon lists now. I paid a bit over a thousand dollars for the placement of the generator and the turnkey install. I paid my propane supplier about $150 to run another gas line (which was necessary) and hook it up. My total installed and running cost was about $4100.The generator started right up and ran just as it was supposed to. I performed all the tests in the manual: run, no-load, and load, and everything was within the stated specs. (Note: you will need a DMM that measures frequency to perform these tests. If you do not feel comfortable performing these tests after reading the relevant sections in the manual, pay a licensed electrician to perform them.)
Since then, it has run its weekly automatic test cycle without incident. Ironically, we have only had one power outage long enough to engage the automatic generator switchover. In March, there was a three hour outage, and the generator started, transferred, supplied power, transferred back, and shut down without incident.
I am completely satisfied with the performance of this generator so far.
Owner maintenance is straightforward and simple, with one exception. My rating of four stars is based solely on the inconvenience and complexity of one of the routine periodic maintenance procedures: checking and setting the valve clearance. This procedure is supposed to be performed at 50 hours of operation and every 100 hours thereafter. Suffice to say that the procedure involves significant disassembly, a few special tools and the homeowner attempting this for the first time should allow a morning or afternoon to accomplish it. In addition, the manual is fairly vague about some of the things necessary to accomplish this procedure. The simplest cure for this would be for the manufacturer to supply engines having hydraulic lifters. Kohler does this, and were it not that I would have had to pay over $1,000 more for a Kohler unit, I would have gone that route. Any valve maintenance is completely obviated by hydraulic lifters, just as on contemporary cars and trucks.
