For the money, the Ensupra is a much better deal. More overall information on the LCD 3 windows high display. Comes with two LR44 button cell batteries to retain internal memory.

1. Does not have a backlighted display!!!
2. 3 prong plug receptacle on front face is difficult to use.
3. Cannot display more than one electrical parameter, e.g. Voltage and Current at the same time.
4. Accuracy is unspecified.
5. No "down" button.
6. Questionable safety implied as Overload cannot be set less than 3680 watts, which is over 150% of maximum power rating (1800W, 120V, 15A) of the unit.

First day with the generator, so I'll post some updates as I put it to the test of supplying our home with emergency power when we get our inevitable winter disruptions. Ok, so you know, I've been around all kinds of power equipment for more years than most of you have been alive, and am intimately familiar with most of it. After reading a gazillion reviews on generators, I bought this one because it gets raves from just about everybody. I did some research on the company, and they seem to be operating with uncommon integrity.

So I unpacked the generator, sat down and read the manual (I always do that), topped up the oil, added a gallon of fresh fuel, turned on the ignition, gas valve and the choke. Then I was going to pull the engine through once or twice gently before the real pull that would start it, but hey, it started half way through the first pull! After half a minute, I turned off the choke and the engine ran smoothly.

There are lots of opinions on the noise level. I started it in my shop, where I have run many other small engines, and this one qualifies as one of the quietest. WAY quieter than the Honda-powered pressure washer I had just been servicing. Actually, there is more (normal) engine/mechanical noise than exhaust noise, so once outside where it's supposed to be anyway, it will be a lot quieter without hard walls to echo the noise.

After about five minutes of running, I plugged in a few tools, among them a 1500W heat gun. The engine sound difference was barely discernible and the voltage stayed right on.

I talked to a tech guy on these generators and he said the one biggest issue people have with them is they leave old fuel in the tank when the machine is in storage for months on end. Adding a fuel stabilizer intended to keep our new alcohol-laced gasoline stable is key. I'm going to run it for 5 hours and then change the oil to Mobil 1 full synthetic. I use this oil in all my small engines (and in my vehicles and even in my Harley) and I have no engine problems.

BTW, I got this idea from another reviewer but it bears reposting: To open the box, I cut all around the bottom about a half-inch off the floor. Then I just lifted off the whole box that is now my storage cover. Neat.

I'll post an update after some good running hours, but so far, this little generator is A-1.

OK, it is now January, 2013, so it's Update Time:

We've had our generator for about a year now. Before purchase, I read all the rave reviews, and I second them all . . . with the possible exception of those who call it "quiet!" Our neighbors don't agree, and it sounds to me to be as loud as any genset I've ever used. But we live in the Redwood forest and we have predictable power outages during just about every winter storm, so this little gem as paid for itself several times already. It always starts easily, usually on the first pull. Since we live in CA, we had to pay extra for the "CA version," which I believe means it has some extra exhaust-clogging hardware on the muffler. BTW, the noise from this machine is not exhaust noise, but rather mechanical noise. I have no idea why it's so loud, but hey, it always works, so it's fine with me. With a light load, it has always had a "lope" in the running speed, and since the CA version will not allow any carburetor mixture adjustments, I just move the choke lever toward "choke" a bit until the speed evens out. I've had it running over 8 hours on a full tank and the gauge still shows some fuel when I refill it. It powers all the essentials of our home (full kitchen, gas furnace blower, office, TV, quite a few lights, and various power tools, all through a 6-circuit transfer switch. Sweet! This genset, especially at the tiny price, is the deal of deals!

I purchased this unit as backup to use for power outages and also to take out to the desert. I decided to go for the pull start because of all the reviews about how easy it is. The generator started on the 1st pull, and it seems well built and has a solid construction.

It seemed to easily power our overhead 13,500 BTU AC Unit and our 30ft Stealth Toy Hauler. Worked great and it never seemed to bog down. The noise was actually quite minimal. I have purchased this unit elsewhere, it is a great addition to the circuit which allows me to review quickly the balance of wattage being used at any given time. It is best to balance the load on each 120vac side of the generator winding. You only have 1/2 the rating of the generator on each 120vac side, exp.7500 gen is rated 3750 watts per side. I bought two pairs, one to connect one 12V battery to another in parallel (creating what they call a battery bank) and the other pair to connect the 2nd battery to a Whistler Pro-2000 power inverter. In my situation, a one-foot pair would have sufficed to connect the batteries and a two-foot pair would have worked to connect the second battery to the inverter. As it is, the arrangement looks a little disorganized but I wasn't out to win any awards for style. These are good, solid, high-quality cables that do the job. I've run the inverter under load for hours trying to test the limits of the batteries and these cables don't get even slightly warm. That suggests to me that they are providing very little resistance to the flow of electricity which is what you want for efficiency and safety. Very happy with this purchase.

Goal Zero 14201 Firefly Silver/White USB Light Review

So I bought this and thought the idea was great considering I have other products from Goal Zero to include the Lumina light (similar product with USB plug in). the amount of light is nice. I used it on a trip reciently as a night light for the kids. It was bit bright so it did well.

The Bad - I plugged this is to many items and the same thing happened, the unit got very hot. not to the level of burning my hand on contact but I would not be able to hold it for long after about 10 minutes. I called to ask if this was normal and was told it is an issues the engineers know about but it is not a priority to fix right now.
My thoughts - light gets too hot to hold means two things. 1. it will drain my battery quickly (it did). 2. Anything it touches will most likly melt at some point or cause harm in some way.

Would I buy again - NO. Wjhile it is a great idea the heat is a large issue for me. you decide but I would not buy until this is solved.

We live in the middle of the "Hurricane Alley" Texas gulf coast and last year we bought and had installed a Generac 20KW totally automatic natural gas fired 999cc generator from Wired Electric, who did a nice job at a decent price. Part of the secret to anything mechanical lasting more than a couple of years is proper and regular maintenance. In the case of the Generac here, once a year you need to change air filter, oil filter, spark plugs and motor oil to keep your warranty current. Wired lets the homeowner do that if they wish so long as they document the maintenance and can prove they did, in deed do the scheduled work at the scheduled intervals and did it properly and correctly. I am a mechanicaly inclined guy so I opted to do that, according to the owners manual and precisley as instructed with genuine replacement parts. OK, so what does a "kit" consist of?

Well, in the box there is a spin on replacement oil filter and a dandy paper funnel to put the oil in your motor, a little handy spark plug wrench and two Champion replacement plugs, an exact fit air filter and a drop cloth to help with any spills. I have seen guys charging 40 bucks or more per kit and when I found this provider offering the same for only 15 bucks a pop, I said "stock up". And I did just that. Exactly as described and exactly as the factory originals because it is factory original merchandise at an affordable rate. Oh yeah, our Wired technician, Joe told me to use a high quality 10/W/40 oil when changing it out. Takes 1.9 US quarts which includes oil filter capacity when changed every year. I selected Mobil fully synthetic "High Mileage" oil since this is an air cooled motor and who knows when it may be used for considerable days on end in the event of whatever perils lurk out there? I know my other Texas based reviewer says he does not recommend using synthetics in warm climates (Based on what???) I wanted to back up my recommendation to use synthetic oil in ANY air cooled motor with the following recommendation from aircooled.net's own tech talk forum "Since synthetic oil has better heat transfer qualities than dino oil, your internal engine temperatures will be lower. Things like bearings, especially, will not operate at as high of a temperature as a result. The wider range of temperatures that synthetic oil can withstand is well suited for the air-cooled VW engine. With head temperatures normally between 300-350 degrees, synthetic will not breakdown while lubricating the valve train components at the heads. The better lubricating properties of synthetic in general will lead to a longer engine life as well. On average, when synthetic oil is run in an air-cooled VW engine, head temperatures stay the same, but engine oil temps reduce by anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees. This is in identical engines that have all the correct cooling tin in place, and are not suffering from overheating to begin with. Important note: Do not run synthetic to fix a hot running engine. Find the real reason it's running hot, and fix it!" There you have it. Your Generac is also an AIR COOLED engine and is made of the same materials as a VW, Corvair or any other air cooled engine. This is THEIR recommendation, not mine. Go for it.

I just received this generator a few days ago. The packing was fine and there was no obvious damage. Once I began to assemble the unit, I noticed a couple of annoying problems:

1. One of the battery terminal screws was missing. I replaced this with one of my own.
2. The bolts/nuts provided for attaching the handles are totally inadequate. no amount of fudging or tweaking allowed the handles to be attached with the provided hardware. I replaced with my own.
3. The wheels don't fit that well and do not appear to be very study. When installed and righted, they bow outward at the base and the metal collar is clearly out of round.
4. The manual was essentially written for a somewhat different model generator.
5. Discoloration, dirt, and other undesirable elements were evident in the finish of some components.

Overall impression of build quality was "poor".

I decided to start the unit up using a BBQ grill propane tank. I followed the instructions, but noted immediately that the electric start did not work. Indeed, the starter never budged AT ALL. The manual claims that the battery may come partially discharged and that running the unit for "a few minutes" will charge the battery sufficiently to allow the electric start to work. IT DOES NOT. in fact, running the unit for 1 FULL HOUR did not rectify the problem. Either there is a wiring problem, the battery is bad, or the starter is bad.

While running, the engine will randomly sputter. Again the manual claims this should resolve in a "few minutes". IT DOES NOT. Putting the unit under load (an electric leaf blower) DID however rectify the engine sputter, until the appliance is shutoff, at which point, the sputter resumes.

*UPDATE: After talking to customer tech support they stated that the engine runs RICH on propane which they say is necessary. That would explain why the engine quits sputtering under load.*

I have not yet had a chance to test it under 240V loads.

So here are a couple of questions: WHY ALL THE 5 STAR REVIEWS?? The build quality of this generator is clearly very poor. I don't like the idea of dropping $650, replacing hardware, struggling with ill-fitting components, and then have the starter fail to work. Yes, I realize there is a pull rope, but I did PAY FOR AN ELECTRIC STARTER. My next step is to determine what the problem is with the electric start, and after that, contact "customer service" to see if anyone responds. Then test out the 240V load at some point. I will update when I know more, but for now I give this unit 3 stars based on my initial evaluation of the product, and the good customer support I've received thus far.

My advice for those of you shopping for generators and considering this unit: CALL CUSTOMER SUPPORT IF THERE IS A BUILD QUALITY ISSUE. Ask them to provide a resolution without cost to you, and make sure you TEST YOUR GENERATOR THOROUGHLY when you first receive it. Build quality issues need to be identified up-front and addressed with the seller, who informs me is also the manufacturer (actually they have them manufactured in PRC and import them). If you wait and find the problem later, it could be erroneously attributed to wear-and-tear, or might occur after the warranty has expired.

UPDATE #1: I've confirmed that the battery is not the problem. After checking the voltage, applying a light trickle charge, and rechecking, the battery has ample voltage to at least turn the starter over, and it does not - not a sound, not a whisper. I have reviewed the seller's return policy, and generators cannot be returned once they are removed from the packaging. Also, any return shipments to this seller, even if defective, are the responsibility of the buyer - shipping and insurance. On heavy items, this is cost prohibitive. Moreover, this seller charges for shipping and handling to send replacement parts on a new and defective unit? Unbelievable. I have contacted the seller as it is supposed to provide warranty service for this generator. We will see what happens.

UPDATE #2: I've determined the problem is a bad starter solenoid. I did this by successfully jumping the starter. So there isn't a wiring problem or a battery problem.

UPDATE #3: One call to Factory Authorized Outlet and they agreed to send along a replacement solenoid unit at no charge. They were quite easy to deal with. Second call was from the seller, to confirm solenoid was being express shipped, and also to inquire as to my comments here regarding build quality. After discussing the wheels, they have offered to send replacements at no charge. Once I have the replacement parts and they are installed, I will update and revisit my review. I would say that Factory Authorized Outlet has been very good thus far at addressing issues.

UPDATE #4: Received the solenoid and replaced it (this was a little tricky). In order to access the solenoid screws properly, I had to remove the battery. Once in place I discovered to my horror that the unit still did not start! There is a single wire coming from the solenoid up into the main panel which is connected to the ignition switch. I carefully removed the main panel (attached by 4 bolts and checked the wire. Sure enough, it was loose and shorting out. After adjusting, it now starts (finally) using the electric start. The wheel replacements have shipped, and I will report back once I have those.
