I purchased and installed this unit in my QO load center. I had to move two single pole breakers to lower slots such that this unit is in the slots closest to the service entrance lugs. From the instructions it indicates you should have good ground paths ( I have two separate paths) and it does not replace surge protection for electronic devices. Rather it augments the surge strips for those devices. I bought it primarily to protect my appliances and AC unit. Time will tell if it is effective.

HQRP 500W Grid Tie MPPT Power Inverter 10.5V~28V DC 110V~120V AC for Solar Panel System plus HQRP UV Chain / UV Radiation He Review

I hooked this up to two 100 watt solar panels wired in parallel and I haven't been able to draw more than 155 watts (of the 200 watt rating) measured at the panels when measured with a Watts Up meter. Voltage is draw down to around 14 volts when the optimum range for the panels should be closer to 18 volts, so I'm certain there's a loss factor with this device.

Measured draw shows it slowly ramps up wattage over about 30 seconds when first brought online and shuts down properly when grid power is removed. This doesn't appear to have a UL rating, so that can be an issue with your power company / using the device in the US.

I will be honest, I bought this as an insurance policy against any more long power outages after SANDY when we were out for two weeks. LOL But, per usual, did a lot of research. I have had a 1000W yamaha to run CPAP on an island for years and it would run my gas stove for heat and cooking or my TV/Amps and my computer for video but that was it. Refrigerator and oil burner motors needed more than twice that to start up.
I was aware of the difference between Generators and INVERTERS but to give you some quick info, I provide the following. The power you get off the street is supposed to be less than 5%THD. THD is Total Harmonic Distortion which simply is the amount the power is not 60 cycles which causes distortion and fluctuations in how equipment uses it. Anything run off a wall wart or power pack really does not care much but any high end electronics or computers and ALL motors - like refrigerator, dishwasher, furnace, circulator pumps, water pumps, heat pumps, and air-conditioning like clean power at least as clean as the mains 5%THD. When motors run at excessive THD it causes the windings to heat up more than designed and shortens the life of motors. Increasingly, newer computers are requiring "clean power" that can only come from the line, an inverter or a processor controlled UPS.
Most generators do not running steady provide 5%THD and as loads fluctuate they get even worse as they bog down from their typical 3600 RPM running speed. Note 3600 divided by 60 is 60. There are several ways Generators try to smooth this out which is for a different discussion but very few maintain 5% THD even when under constant load.
Using an INVERTER with microprocessor is the solution, similar to using an alternator in a car that can provide the same power at different speeds and provide power with low THD.
Lifam ESI 5600iER INVERTER provides clean power - less than 2% THD! In talking to one of their engineers, I found out two things. First, they take pride in the reliability of their equipment and have so few returns [so a B stock is not available] that they send those few back to the factory for analysis. SO FEW! Also, they try to make not only their inverters clean but their generators should always provide less than 5% THD. Very impressive. But for my money, to have a 5000W running inverter that will run most modest and a bit larger homes for the price of the LIFAM 5600, it does not make sense to consider a generator.
Now a couple more facts. The LIFAM is QUIET. Compared to most generators that run at 72 to 78 dB the LIFAM runs at less then 60 dB which is significant! Also, because the LIFAM 5600eIR is regulating its response to load automatically, it uses less gas when less power is needed saving money for each tank and refilling less often.
And finally, the LIFAM 5600 comes with the battery that is left off most electric generators AND comes with remote start with two remotes. It has a pull start that allowed it to start on the second pull out of the box. With remote start it cranks for two or three seconds and then purrs. The unit is heavy, over 140 pounds, but moves around nicely on its castered wheels and has a nice handle that folds onto unit. Everything you need to fill oil [use rubber fill tray that is bottom cover] and a screw in spout for emptying.
Quick Specifications: Two 120 VAC 20 Amp or one 30 Amp [plug included] circuits at 5600 Watts Load and 5000 W continuous run with a max of 45 Amps. Plus the usual 12 VDC @ 8.3A charger port and cable. Fuel tank of 4.2 gallons which should get you MORE than 8.5 hours at 50% load. Auto Idle, Auto low oil and Auto Voltage regulation!
Though I have not had to use the generator for an extended time since SANDY, it is my view that it will provide me with years of great service as a comparable quality to Yamaha or Honda at far less cost.
