Generac 5846 XG8000E 8,000 Watt 410cc OHVI Gas Powered Portable Generator with Wheel Kit & Electric Start (CARB Compliant) Review
We purchased this generator to run our entire house during the numerous power outages we are forced to endure every year up here in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It seems that whenever we get a strong winter storm with any amount of gusty winds, our power invariably goes out. Some times these outages can last for days, and a few years ago we were without power for over 6 days! Of course this always happens when our outside air temperature is in the 20s which makes it even harder to endure. After the last big outage last winter we decided that before the winter of 2012 we were going to buy a generator!
We started by looking at the big propane fueled standby generators but the cost was prohibitive. That left only a gasoline fueled unit which I wasn't crazy about because I didn't like the idea of having to store gasoline on our property, but three Eagle U2-51-S Red Galvanized Steel Type II Gas Safety Can with 7/8" Flex Spout, 5 gallon Capacity, 13.5" Height, 12.5" Diameter gas cans later, that became a non-issue.
I did my usual thorough research online and came away with a clear indication that Generac as a brand was one of the top, if not THE top manufacturers of this type of product. They are 100% made in the USA which was also something we wanted since everything else we looked at was made in China. The primary selling point besides being made in Wisconsin was the Generac designed and manufacturered OHV engine which is designed specifically for use as a generator engine. Since a generator engine is called upon to run at a fixed RPM for hours, days and heaven forbid... WEEKS at a time, we didn't want a unit that used an engine that could also be found on lawn tractors and and other powered vehicles, since this application is a lot more demanding on a motor than that based solely on the hours of continuous operation at a fixed RPM! The Generac engine uses a lubrication system like a passenger car engine complete with an oil filter! Most other brands use a glorified lawn tractor engine with the more primitive SPLASH lubrication system that doesn't lubricate the engine parts as well and won't give you the same longevity when used in this capacity. We needed something reliable for years to come so that the cure didn't become more of a hassle to deal with than the disease!
Anyway... After checking out the various Generac models and consulting with an electrician on our power demands, we settled on the XG8000E, and because we live in California, we were forced to buy the CARB compliant version. When you can only choose from CARB compliant generators your choices are far more limited than most folks in other parts of the country. However, from everything I read online, owners of this particular XG series model were very happy with the unit's performance and reliability.
We made the deicision to purchase it from Amazon.com because their price was very low at the time, and got in right before the new sales tax thing kicked in! The unit arrived in record time and was delivered by a local shipping company right to our carport where I wanted to assemble the wheels and get the unit ready to be rolled to the back deck of our house where it will be permanently housed/used/stored. Assembly was very straight forward and took only a few minutes since all we had to do was to attach the wheels to the frame. The handle and everything else was already on the unit from the factory. The hardest part was lugging this 250 pound monster down the side yard which isn't paved, and this is where I would have preferred softer tires than the hard rubber/plastic tires this unit comes with, but once it was back there, that all became moot, since we are never going to move this thing again!
After final assembly and connecting the starter motor wire, we added in the SAE 30 break in oil that was supplied with the unit, filled it up half way with 5 gallons of gasoline, turned on the fuel switch and hit the electric starter. The unit fired up immediately, and after moving the choke in to the full in position, we proceeded to run the unit for about 30 minutes before stopping it to recheck the oil level. Once we determined that the oil level was still at the correct level, we started the unit again and this time let it run for 2 hours. It purred like a kitten the entire time! No issues whatsoever! Over the next week, we ran the unit for about 30 minutes every few days to put a few more hours on it before we hooked it to a serious load. We ran it this way for a while longer until our electrical contractor could come out to wire in the big four prong power cable and breakers to connect the 8000E to our home's electrical box.
Once that job had been completed, we switched off our main power, started the generator and let it run for a few minutes before plugging in the big power cable and flipped the red power switch on the front of the unit which then sent the power from the generator to our entire house. We turned on everything we could think of in our home in order to see how much of a total load our place would put on the 8000E. This included all the lights in all rooms, a big screen TV, audio amplifiers, our XBOX, PS3, 5 Macintosh computers, two space heaters, a toaster oven, a microwave and our forced air heater blower (Gas heat). Even with all of this stuff turned on, the power demand display on the 8000E was only showing a 40% load! (First two segments on the POWER BAR LED display)
Now normally, during a power outage, we would never have all of this stuff on and running at the same time, but it was a good test. The XG8000E handled this load without breaking a sweat and we proceeded to let it run for over an hour as we tried switching other devices on and off to see how it effected the load. With only our usual power demands, the total load was only 20%, which based on the owner's manual should give us over 20 hours of operation on a single 9 gallon tank. Generac rates the unit at 10 hours at a 50% load.
While we haven't had a power outage since we purchased this unit, we are more than prepared for one now and could not be more pleased with how smoothly this unit starts up and operates. And more importantly, how well it ran all of our home's various power demands!
I have read some complaints here and a few other online review sites about the noise of this unit, and I frankly find that odd! Apprently, these folks must not be familiar with other brands of generators and how loud most of them are compared to this one! Our Generac is far less noisey than any of our neighbors generators which are all in the 5500 to 6500 watt range. No... I can't agree with that complaint at all! In fact, as the unit has been breaking in, the overall sound output from the unit has gone down noticeably from the first few hours of operation. This is most likely due to the engine breaking in and all the various parts seating into their final orientations.
My advice is simple...If you live in California and are forced like we were to buy a CARB compliant gasoline powered generator, AND you want to power your entire house with it, then I don't think you can go wrong with the Generac XG8000E or possibly the 10000E if you need more power than this one can put out! We are very happy with our purchase and look forward to years of trouble free service and no longer fear the consequences of our frequent winter storms! Now when the power goes out, I just flip the starter switch, fire this thing up, plug in the 4 prong power cord, flip the breakers on our power box and viola! All the power we need for as long as we need it!
5-Stars and then some!
