Xantrex 802-1500 XPower 1,500 Watt Portable Powerpack Review

I needed a powerful but sealed power-pack (sealed battery + converter) for poolside use, to power a large 110-volt karaoke machine for five hours a day. The Xatrex 1500 is the only power-pack I've found that meets this requirement.

It was a pleasant surprise to find that the wheels have rubber rather than (noisy) plastic treads.

The first 1500 stopped working with a bang after two hours. When I phoned the Xantrex company, the technician I soon was talking to quickly concluded that my 1500 had malfunctioned and recommended that I return it. I was pleased with this candor. The second 1500 has worked for about a month now.

Not obvious is that the 1500 has a small storage cabinet, in which I store an extension cord.

Both 1500s arrived undamaged. A disclaimer is that I bought my 1500s from costo-dot-comm, which is relevant because perhaps Costco uses different packaging for shipping.

The "large karaoke machine" is a MegaStar CM-K1100, and its average draw has been 30-something watts.

9/18/06 Update: Around July the charge time dropped to under four hours. When I called Xantrex, the technician told me that battery life is about 200 charges.

Diodes will prevent electricity from flowing back into solar panels (at night and on very cloudy days) or into wind generators (when there is little or no wind). In short, they prevent your battery banks from losing their stored energy. This diode is especially useful for solar panels where it is important to keep forward voltage drops to an absolute minimum.Axial leads solderable per MIL-STD-202Polarity: Color band denotes cathode endWeight 2.10 gramSimply put, this is a reliable diode with a high current rating and a low forward voltage drop.

GenTran Portable Generator Line Voltage Meter LVM450 Review

I bought this meter to use in our travel trailer to make sure we are receiving proper voltage at campgrounds. All you have to do is plug it in to any outlet and then check that the voltage is in the safe range. The dial is illuminated so seeing it at night is easy. Low voltage can be damaging to A/C units and when you plug in at a campground you want to be sure that the hookup is proper. The meter is cheap insurance.

Champion Power Equipment 73500i Parallel Power Kit For 73536i Review

The Parallel and Generator synchronization cable with 30A camper outlet is very easy to install on the champion 73531i inverting generators. It integrates nicely into the stacked frame so it looks very nice and not "tacked-on" as some of the other generators do. It is also sturdy and will readily accept a 30A Camper Plug. It works the the first time I installed it without any problems. It's also easy to disconnect from the generators for storage.

BTW, you must have this cable to synchronize both generators. There's more to it that just hooking two generators in parallel. There is a communications cable that runs between both generators to keep them in sync so the entire electrical load is balanced over both generators.

Product Description

The Nomad 13.5M collect 13.5 watts of power from the sun, and stores power with the Sherpa 50 power pack for use anytime. The solar panel charges the Sherpa 50 power pack in 6-10 hours from the sun, giving you the power you need to use your smartphone, GPS, portable media player, or any other device you carry. On the mountain or at the beach, the Nomad 13.5M goes wherever you do.

Goal Zero 12401 Nomad 13.5M Solar Panel Review

Some time ago i felt the urgent need to own one of these foldable solar panels. This panel was meant to be one of my "zombie apocalypse is coming 2012"-gadgets for my "BOB" or "Get Home"-Bag. Better be prepared! To be honest: Neither am i a serious backpacker, nor a real survivalist, but i do collect knives and survival gear to just own it in case of an emergency, "catastrophes" or "terrorist attacks". Funny, huh?

For the review part: For whatever i want to purchase i do A LOT of investigation in advance (Youtube videos, (amazon) reviews, forums, blogs) and always want to spend my money on the ONE best option available. This only works in theory (at least for me...), in practice i nearly always end up in ordering two or more items, because i simply can't decide between them.

The solar panel was supposed to power a Galaxy Tab 7 (battery = 3,7v * 4000mah= 14,8wh), a HTC Desire HD (3,7v * 1230mah = 4,5wh), some portable USB Speakers (<2,5wh) and my stone age sony mp3 player (<2,5wh). All these devices have a minimum runtime of one day per charge except the USB speakers.

My masterplan: To power all these devices at the same time, you do of course need some type of buffer battery (pack) with at least one 5V/2Amp USB out (necessary to charge the G-Tab) and a capacity of about 30wh. I ended up in orderimg two power packs: Anker2 (8400mah at 3,7V = 31wh) and powergorilla (120wh -> BAMM!!).

Each Powerpack has its own advantages / disadvantages (size, weight, capacity, limited outputs, adapters, charge time...), but they both get the job done WITHOUT a solar panel. Both can charge all my equipment at least once per day without seeing a wall outlet or a solar panel.

blablabla. To make it short: i thought a panel rated from 10 to 15wp should be able to do the job of charging about 30wh into either battery pack on one day (no matter if it's sunny or cloudy).

What should i buy?

Goal Zero nomad 13.5:
Technology which already has proven to perform (monocrystal, hey, that's what my neighbour got on his roof: I know it works!)
Durable and foldable
highly efficient
Darn cool looking (i say)
made in USA (i thought)

Sunlinq/Sunload 12w panel:
Rather new technology (CIGS cells - no long term experiences yet)
Durable and foldable and lightweight
12-15% efficiency compared to 18-20% of goal zero
takes up more space -> unfolded!

I took my two panels, my USB stuff and a multimeter outside on a semicloudy day (which is pretty much "standard weather" where i live).

Both panels were lying flat on the ground, with no shadows and partly cloudy sky. Both panels delivered about 18V (sunlinq 17 and goal zero higher with 18-19V) with no load. When switching the multimeter to Amp measurement was when my jaw dropped. GZ: 0.04A and Sunlinq: 0,5A (* 12V). Tilting the GZ panel towards the (non visible) sun though increased output to 0,138A. Tilting the sunlinq towards the sun is tough, because its similar to truck canvas and folds together too easy. Did not improve output by much anyhow...

To make it short: Both panels fell short in delivering the necessary power for my needs and my weather conditions. The Sunlinq did perform better on this partly cloudy day, but still i needed the whole day to charge the Anker2! It might work for me, but most likely i will upgrade to a 20+ watt panel with CIGS cells.

What i liked about the nomad:

- The formfactor when unfolded (folded it's quite a brick)
- The looks (designed in the US)
- Quality seemed alright (made in China)

What i disliked:

- too bulky when folded (in comparison to the sunload panel)
- danger of breaking (Manual says NOT to bend and NOT to walk on the panel - because of the non flexible solarcells - The sunlinq feels softer, more like a tarpaulin). That's propably why they throw in an empty pack in the commercial video.
- I do not want to carry a multimeter all day, only to find the correct angle for this panel to perfom. That might be the reason why mono cells are installed on roofs with special calculated angles. This is where they perform best.
- weight in comparison to the sunlinq / in relation to it's performance
- 4.7mm special connector (SAE on the Sunlinq is motorcycle standard)
- Output of the USB out not clearly declared (GZ-Website says 5V and 0,5A, printing on panel says 5Watt - bad transformation? or bad translation?). Did not even get the 0,5 out though, when it was cloudy.

The Sunlinq panel is technically identical to the Brunton, Motomaster, Me2 and Sunload panels , as there is only one company which builds/"prints" these CIGS cells ("global solar" in Tucson and Berlin). Differences are only connectorwise.

In a perfect world Goal Zero would use CIGS cells for their future products

Hope this helps (pretty time consuming as i am native german and have to think twice before i write sth. in english, but i benefit a lot from american reviews and thought i'd share a "kind of" objective review).

Update 6/16/12: Got myself 2 higher rated panels for comparison: The P3 with 30wp and the sunlinq 25wp ("sunlinq 5").
First impression:
The P3 is about 2-3 times thicker than the other sunlinqs (12wp and 25wp). Apart from that, there is no big difference (in performance) at all. The only difference technically is a much higher open circuit voltage for the p3 (28V!!!), which does require a (MPPT?) charge controller as an extra investment. So all in all it depends on whether you are willing to pay nearly double the price for a ridiculous amount of extra performance, a 2yr warranty and a military tag, or not.

Most of the consumer Reviews tell that the "Goal Zero 12401 Nomad 13.5M Solar Panel" are high quality item. You can read each testimony from consumers to find out cons and pros from Goal Zero 12401 Nomad 13.5M Solar Panel ...

Propane vs. Gasoline

Portability: Gasoline generators are typically more portable than LP generators. Gasoline generators have on-board tanks, but a propane unit must be powered by piping propane in from an exterior tank. Propane units may be a bit bigger than comparable gasoline generators.

Environment: Propane burns cleaner than natural gas. Carbon monoxide emissions range between 20% to 40% lower. Although burning propane puts 10% more methane into the atmosphere, the result is still a net decrease in effective greenhouse gases.

Storage: Propane will not degrade, so you can keep several propane tanks on hand and store them for an unlimited amount of time. Gasoline has a more limited shelf life and will deteriorate over time. Gasoline tends to go bad if it is not used in a timely manner. A propane generator will start more easily in extremely cold weather because the fuel will not gum up.

Cost: Fuel prices fluctuate for both propane and gasoline. A propane generator needs a more expensive pressurized tank.

Safety: Gasoline spills contaminate and leave stains and odors; propane will dissipate into the air. Propane is naturally odorless, but a distinct but harmless odor is added to warn of leaks.

Availability: Neighborhood gas stations will likely be without electricity, and unable to pump fuel, during power outages. Reliable propane tanks are as close as the backyard grill.

FAQs

How many watts does it take to run essential items in an average size house?

In an average size house, essential items will average 5000-7500 total watts of power to run.

What is the difference between Running (Rated) Watts and Surge (Starting) Watts?

Running (Rated) watts are the continuous watts needed to keep items running. Surge (Starting) Watts are extra watts needed temporarily to start motor-driven products such as refrigerators or circular saws. This is the maximum wattage the generator can produce.

Sportsman GEN7000LP 7000-Watt 13-HP OHV Propane-Powered Portable Generator Review

I bought this at the end of winter to replace my old gasoline powered one after it wouldn't start (due to the ethanol in the gas gumming up the engine) during an ice storm. I was planning to be prepared for this coming winter. I never imagined I would be using it a few months later when a tornado whipped through our neighborhood and county just before Memorial Day. We were fortunate and only without power for 4 days, but this generator came through with flying colors. I hadn't even taken it out of the box and really wasn't at all prepared for this storm. I didn't have the battery in yet so we had to manually pull start. I have neck issues but it wasn't that difficult and started quickly each time. The brochure says you will get around 8 hours on a half load, ...NOT. Try figuring on 4 to 5. Didn't seem to matter what we ran that was the average. At $20 bucks a little 20lb bottle we got into a rhythm of running it noon to 5pm for the heat of the day and again at night 10pm to 3am for showers and such.
I planned to have a large 100lb or maybe 250lb propane tank to have on hand for this winter. The initial investment of 7 additional tanks to add to my two I had for the grill cost around $300. We used 8 bottles total being conservative with the use. Off of that I supplied my house and my daughters house (next door) with power to run a refridgerator and fan, while I ran a freezer and refriderator and fan. We also had an outlet on for charging cell phones. I would turn on the hot water heater to charge it but would turn off some of the refridgerators just to be conservative. We are on a well, so it also had a big draw whenever the pump kicked on.
All and all I am delighted with my purchase, and will make sure to have plenty of propane in place for this winter! (we live on the side of the mountain and you can't always drive up the road). The nice thing about the propane it has a long shelf life unlike the gasoline powered units, so I can relax and know it will be good for a few years not a few months.
Hope this was helpful...

Battery Tender 021-1164 10W Solar Charger Review

The Battery Tender 10W solar panel worked well for 7 months. Now the control unit has apparently failed and the charging LED only flickers occasionally. I was propping the panel against the inside of the windshield of my parked car where it could receive direct sunlight in the afternoon, but even when the sunlight was indirect, the LED charging indicator on the Battery Tender would glow as soon as the sun was fully up in the morning. The car in question doesn't get driven enough to keep its battery from running down, and the solar panel was doing an excellent job of maintaining the battery. I had purchased an adapter cable that plugged into the car's cigarette lighter socket so it wasn't too inconvenient to set up and remove the panel. Previously, I needed to use a battery charger every couple of weeks and now, unfortunately, that chore has returned.

Product Description

The Pro3000 Analog Tone and Probe is your best choice for toning and tracing wire on non-active networks, and specifically for identifying individual pairs with SmartTone technology. Angled bed-of-nails clips allow easy access to individual wires, and the RJ-11 connector is ideal for use on telephone jacks. The large loud speaker on the network probe allows you to hear through drywall, wood or other enclosures to find wires quickly and easily. You can send this loud tone up to 10 miles (16 kilometers) on most cables! Attach the nylon pouch to your belt, and you will be equipped for any wire identification job.

Fluke Networks Pro3000 Analog Tone Generator Review

I had owned one of these for 5 years before leaving it at a client's house. I found the Fluke to be superior in nearly every possible way to brands that my co-workers used.

Best features:
Bed of nails - clamp on to small gauge wires such as individual conductors on cat-5 without having to strip the wire to make a connection.
Alligator tooth - pierce through the jacket and hit the center conductor on larger single conductor types of wire (i.e., speaker wire) so you can tone without stripping the wire.
Powerful generator - No problem sending a tone through wires over distances where other toners would simply not have the power.
Multi-tones - simply short out the wire you are toning and the sound pattern being sent from the generator will change. Great for making sure you're on the right wire.

Downsides:
Occasionally too powerful - there were a few times when tone would be so strong it would bleed to other wires making it difficult to actually determine which was the correct wire. It was rare and not a problem if you took the time to verify your selection however.

I'm buying another one of these to replace the one i've lost. I highly recommend it!
